The thinking behind the numbers
Every comparison needs context.
A useful calculator should explain its reasoning as clearly as its result. Here is what our evidence supports.
A defined scope
We compare individual published ticket products against an ordinary-class nationwide JR Pass purchased through the official JR online service, plus any needed tickets outside its coverage or validity. We do not search every transport option.
Selected Shinkansen pairs use the smartEX basic-service ordinary non-reserved product. This combines the basic and express fare, excludes conventional connections and has no intermediate stopovers. For comparable pass travel, use Hikari, Kodama or Sakura as applicable; connections may be needed. Reserved-seat seasonal fares are not modeled.
HARUKA airport routes use a separate visitor-only discount. Kyoto–Kanazawa uses a visitor-only HOKURIKU ticket via Tsuruga, purchased through an overseas agency. Regular alternatives for these products remain unverified.
Three result states
- Verified comparison: all entered legs and the selected pass option have applicable published evidence. We show both modeled totals and the lower cost within this scope.
- Partial comparison: at least one journey has a verified price, but missing fares, eligibility, pass data or coverage prevent a complete comparison. Known ticket costs are clearly labeled; there is no winner or savings claim.
- Comparison unavailable: no entered leg can be priced, inputs need correction, or dataset validation fails. Each blocker includes a next action.
Verification does not mean a guaranteed purchase quote. Prices, seats, payment conditions and train operation can change; recheck official conditions before buying.
How the arithmetic works
- Each consecutive pair of stops is one rail journey. Its destination date is the travel date in Japan.
- Look up exact station pairs and applicable products. Never infer missing fares or silently substitute a nearby station.
- Check verification status, real calendar dates, source references, purchase requirements, effective dates and freshness. If a discount is unavailable, use an independently verified applicable regular product if one exists.
- Use explicitly recorded adult and child prices for the entered counts. Add group leg costs to the verified subtotal; show a full ticket total only when every leg is priced.
- For each verified 7-, 14- and 21-day pass, calculate its group price and add separate tickets for uncovered legs or travel dates outside the activation window.
- Compare the complete ticket total against the selected complete pass-plus-extra-ticket total. Incomplete data never produces a definitive difference or recommendation.
JPY only. No exchange rate, assumed group discount or invented fee. Under-6s and age-category transitions are not modeled; ask the operator about those cases.
Eligibility and purchase arrangements
Regular smartEX pricing does not require foreign-passport Temporary Visitor status. Visitor discounts and this online pass comparison do. Eligibility is self-reported; the tool neither verifies identity nor collects passport details. Other JR Pass eligibility categories need individual advice.
The discount checkboxes are optional statements about your actual purchase arrangements. Do not select them just to obtain a result. If HARUKA or HOKURIKU discounts do not apply, those legs stay unpriced until a regular fare is independently verified. Other priced legs remain visible.
Child ages must stay within the chosen category throughout purchase and use. JR Pass online child rules refer to age at purchase; other ticket products have their own rules. Explicit child amounts are used rather than simply halving adult totals.
Activation windows and extra tickets
A 7-day pass starting on 10 November covers 10–16 November, inclusive. Dates are consecutive Japan calendar days, not a bank of seven travel days.
Automatic selection compares candidate starts where a journey enters or leaves the window, bounded by the first itinerary date. Coverage changes only at these boundaries, so the engine can minimize the modeled pass-plus-extra-ticket cost without assuming the first rail date is optimal. Ties use the earliest feasible candidate. Manual mode compares your chosen start for each duration.
Journeys outside a window are priced separately using the same applicable ticket evidence. A known uncovered route is also paid separately. Unknown coverage or unverified extra charges prevent a winner. With missing legs, displayed windows are provisional because unknown costs can change the best choice. Only one pass per traveler is modeled.
Freshness and limitations
All fare and rule records require official source provenance and a recorded inspection date. Unverified, stale, future-dated, malformed, expired or not-yet-effective records are blocked. Our 90-day inspection and travel horizon is a review policy, not an operator guarantee.
The currently linked smartEX matrix is dated April 2025; HARUKA and HOKURIKU pages label their information February 2025. We disclose those dates alongside our October 2026 inspections. We checked published material, not a live checkout, so operator confirmation remains necessary.
We do not validate timetable connections, overnight travel, seat availability, disruption, local alternatives, regional passes or multiple passes. Nozomi/Mizuho extra tickets, non-JR sections, Green/GranClass and special accommodations are excluded from the modeled services. A nationwide pass never means all Japanese transport is covered.
More eligible long-distance journeys within a pass window can make the pass economical. Fewer journeys, local travel or a short regional itinerary may favor individual tickets or another option outside this tool. Convenience is a personal choice, not an invented monetary benefit.
